The automatic hyphenation feature of QuarkXPress works for only one language: an english version of QuarkXPress can only hyphenate english texts, a german version only german texts, etc. To avoid wrong hyphenations, QuarkXPress stores informations about its language in the documents. If a document is opened in a different international version of QuarkXPress, the program will know that it is not able to hyphenate the text and display a warning. The automatic hyphenation is disabled for this document.
SpeedOpen enables you to modify this language information in your documents. You can, for example, open a document that has been created by a different international version of QuarkXPress and set its language to that of your version. This way you avoid the warning mentioned above and enable automatic hyphenation - with the risk of incorrect hyphenations.
Another possibility is to set a document that you've created to a different langauge. This makes it more easy for QuarkXPress users in other countries to open your document. You can, for example, create a german text using your english version of QuarkXPress and set the language of the document to "German". As a result, it is not possible to apply automatic hyphenation to the text, but since the english hyphenation rules are not applicable to german texts, this wouldn't be advisable either. However, a QuarkXPress user in Germany could open your document without any warning about missing hyphenations.
To use this feature of SpeedOpen, you have to select the command Hyphenation… in the SpeedOpen submenu. This opens a dialog containing a popup menu that lets you select the desired language for the current document. The default selection is the language of your QuarkXPress version.
